A–Z

Scientific terminology becomes more useful when placed in biological context. This glossary offers concise definitions rather than isolated abbreviations, helping readers connect concepts across hematology, immunology and modern biotechnology.

A

Adaptive Immunity

Immune responses involving lymphocytes with antigen-specific receptors, including conventional T and B cells. These responses can generate immunological memory.

T Cell Development ↗

Apoptosis

A regulated form of cell death involving coordinated molecular processes. It helps control blood cell production and remove selected developing cells.

B

B Cell

A lymphocyte lineage associated with antibody-mediated immunity. Mature B cells may differentiate into antibody-secreting plasma cells or memory B-cell populations.

B Cell Development ↗

Bone Marrow Niche

The cellular and molecular microenvironment that influences hematopoietic stem cell retention, maintenance, activation and differentiation.

Marrow Microenvironment ↗
C

CD Markers

Cluster of differentiation markers: molecules used to identify or characterize cell populations. Marker expression varies with developmental state and cell type.

Clonal Hematopoiesis

The disproportionate contribution of descendants from a particular hematopoietic cell clone to blood formation, sometimes associated with acquired somatic mutations.

Explore Clonal Hematopoiesis ↗

CXCL12

A chemokine involved in hematopoietic cell positioning, marrow retention and regulation through receptors including CXCR4.

CXCL12 and the HSC Niche ↗
D

Differentiation

The process through which a cell acquires a more specialized molecular identity and function. Hematopoietic differentiation generates multiple blood and immune cell populations.

DNMT3A

A DNA methyltransferase gene involved in epigenetic regulation. Somatic variants in DNMT3A are common in age-associated clonal hematopoiesis.

E

Erythropoiesis

The production and maturation of red blood cells from hematopoietic progenitors. The process involves erythroid differentiation, hemoglobin synthesis and enucleation.

Explore Erythropoiesis ↗

Erythropoietin (EPO)

A hormone primarily produced by the adult kidney that supports survival of responsive erythroid progenitors and regulates red blood cell production.

EPO and Hypoxia ↗
F

Flow Cytometry

An analytical method that measures optical and fluorescence-associated characteristics of individual cells as they pass through an instrument's detection system.

Research Methods ↗
G

Granulopoiesis

The developmental process generating granulocytes, including neutrophil, eosinophil and basophil lineages.

Granulopoiesis ↗

G-CSF

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a cytokine particularly important in neutrophil production and mobilization of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.

H

Hematopoiesis

The biological process through which stem and progenitor cells generate circulating blood and immune cells.

Hematopoiesis Guide ↗

Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC)

A cell capable of long-term self-renewal and producing multiple hematopoietic lineages, demonstrated through appropriate functional assays.

Stem Cell Biology ↗

Hypoxia

A condition of reduced oxygen availability relative to tissue requirements. Hypoxia-related signaling affects metabolism and erythropoietin regulation.

I

IL-7

Interleukin-7, a cytokine important for the development and maintenance of selected lymphoid populations, with effects dependent on developmental context.

Immune Tolerance

Mechanisms that limit harmful responses to self-antigens and support appropriate immune regulation.

J

JAK2

Janus kinase 2, a signaling enzyme associated with several cytokine receptors, including erythropoietin and thrombopoietin receptor signaling systems.

K

KIT (CD117)

A receptor tyrosine kinase activated by stem cell factor (SCF), supporting selected hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell populations.

L

Lineage Commitment

A developmental change that progressively biases or restricts a cell's capacity to produce particular lineages. Commitment may involve gradual molecular transitions.

Lymphopoiesis

The development of lymphoid populations, including B cells, T cells and natural killer cells.

M

Megakaryocyte

A large marrow cell derived from the megakaryocytic lineage that generates circulating platelets.

Thrombopoiesis ↗

Monopoiesis

The generation of monocytes through hematopoietic differentiation pathways.

Monopoiesis ↗

Multipotency

The capacity of a stem or progenitor population to generate more than one differentiated cell lineage.

N

Natural Killer Cell (NK Cell)

An innate lymphocyte that integrates activating and inhibitory receptor signals to participate in immune surveillance, cytotoxicity and cytokine production.

Natural Killer Cells ↗

Neutrophil

A granulocytic white blood cell important in early host defense against many microbial infections.

P

Progenitor Cell

A cell descended from a stem or earlier progenitor population, typically showing progressively more restricted developmental potential and self-renewal capacity.

Pseudotime

A computational ordering of cells along inferred developmental or transitional states. Pseudotime does not directly measure real elapsed time.

Single-Cell RNA Sequencing ↗
Q

Quiescence

A reversible non-proliferative cell state, commonly associated with G0 of the cell cycle. Quiescence contributes to hematopoietic stem cell maintenance.

HSC Quiescence ↗
R

RNA Velocity

A computational method that estimates local trends in transcriptional state using RNA processing information. It does not replace direct lineage tracing.

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)

Chemically reactive oxygen-containing species involved in signaling and oxidative stress. Their effects on HSCs depend on abundance and context.

S

SCF (Stem Cell Factor)

Also called KIT ligand. SCF activates the KIT receptor and contributes to the survival and maintenance of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.

SCF and the HSC Niche ↗

Self-Renewal

The process through which a stem cell generates descendants that preserve stem cell identity and functional potential.

Single-Cell RNA Sequencing

A family of methods that measures RNA expression in individual cells, enabling analysis of cellular heterogeneity and transcriptional states.

T

T Cell

A lymphocyte that develops through thymic maturation and, in conventional alpha-beta lineages, undergoes TCR selection and CD4 or CD8 differentiation.

T Cell Development ↗

Thrombopoiesis

The production of platelets, primarily through megakaryocyte maturation and platelet release.

Thrombopoiesis ↗

Transcription Factor

A protein that regulates gene expression through interactions with DNA or transcriptional regulatory complexes.
