Mobilized hematopoietic stem cells, that is, stem cells induced to exit marrow and traffic to peripheral blood in response to external stimuli, are now the primary source of stem cells for autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation. The initial observations that hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) were found in the blood of patients recovering from chemotherapy lead to the realization that stem cells could be forced to exit marrow where they can be collected by apheresis and used for clinical transplantation
Concept of mobilization implied application of drugs – chemokine agonists and chemokine receptor antagonists which are disrupt interaction hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) with bone marrow niche and caused their release into bloodstream.
This review, prepublished in Leukemia journal, compared efficacy of different mobilizers in terms of HSC number and function (ability to engraft, multilineage differentiation and self-renewal).
